Two Churches

The thing is, in summary, that there are two Catholic Churches. There is the Church of the papacy and official doctrine, and there is the Church lived day-to-day in millions of parishes, and each, really, has little bearing on the other.

Yes! And this dichotomy applies to many other organizations. The government, for example. Our justice system. Corporations.

It could probably be broken down into even more pieces. Bishops, for example, have different experiences than either the Pope or the parishoners.

yes, and it can be broken down by individual parishes, I'm sure. But then that gets unwieldy.
