Ann here. Just wanted to remind you that Paul Simon's new album, "Surprise," is available today. Hooray! I imagine it'll be available in most stores, but I'll be purchasing it via iTunes.

You can listen to samples--and a few entire tracks--at www.paulsimon.com. Also, Eric kindly notified me about this article about Paul Simon in the New York Times. (Thanks, Eric!) And here's an NPR program about him.

Thanks for the links--I'm going to listen to a track or two now.

The album is...interesting. I love the music, even though it's a pretty big departure for him, but the lyrics are a bit uneven. God shows up in most of the songs, which is fine, but it doesn't really work for me.

Also, there are a couple political songs, or parts of songs, on the album. It's difficult to do political songs (or poetry) well, and honestly I don't think Paul Simon does it well enough.

Still, he has some really great lines, and I do love the sound and meter--the way they weave in and out--and the repetition. It's no "Graceland," or "Rhythm of the Saints," or even "Hearts and Bones," but it's on par with or possibly better than "You're the One," the album he released in 2000.

Of course, I've only listened to "Surprise" once. My opinion might change once I've gotten more familiar with it.
