Wednesday Writing Assignment

A couple of weeks ago I asked for your favorite holiday traditions. As the cold, clear reality of these festive long weekends approaches, tell us about a tradition that was abandoned, for the better.

1. My mom made turkey every Christmas. One year, we screwed up the nerve to request something else...lasagna, perhaps? We've had lasagna ever since. We kids were happy, and my mother was freed from the burdensome duty of tending to a cooking turkey every Christmas.

2. This year, our company went out on a limb and allowed us to forgo assigned seating at the annual holiday party. Everyone had a much better time.

My sisters and I used to take turns choosing the color of the candles for the menorah each night. (Two of us got three nights each, and one of us was always left with just two.)

On my nights, I opted for uniformity: I would use only blue candles, or only red, etc. My sisters mixed it up a bit more.

These traditions were abandoned when my father got the menorah in the divorce and my mother got the candles. I'm not sure the judge realized how that left us in a bit of a spot.
