Wednesday Writing Assignment

A couple of weeks ago I asked for your favorite holiday traditions. As the cold, clear reality of these festive long weekends approaches, tell us about a tradition that was abandoned, for the better.

1. My mom made turkey every Christmas. One year, we screwed up the nerve to request something else...lasagna, perhaps? We've had lasagna ever since. We kids were happy, and my mother was freed from the burdensome duty of tending to a cooking turkey every Christmas.

2. This year, our company went out on a limb and allowed us to forgo assigned seating at the annual holiday party. Everyone had a much better time.

My sisters and I used to take turns choosing the color of the candles for the menorah each night. (Two of us got three nights each, and one of us was always left with just two.)

On my nights, I opted for uniformity: I would use only blue candles, or only red, etc. My sisters mixed it up a bit more.

These traditions were abandoned when my father got the menorah in the divorce and my mother got the candles. I'm not sure the judge realized how that left us in a bit of a spot.

Assigned seating at a company party? Wow. That's just...wow.

Long gone are the Christmases on which everybody got up very early, some of us excitedly, others not so much. Before 6am, at which time we were allowed to wake our parents, my sister and I used to sneak down our creaky little staircase under the pretense of having to use the bathroom, and on our way back upstairs we peeked into the living room to look at our stockings lying on the floor, too full and heavy to hang from their fireplace hooks. The cookies and buttermilk--yes, Santa likes buttermilk, just like Daddy!--we'd put there the night before were usually half-gone, as were the carrots we'd left for the reindeer.

Also, for two years we went to Pizza Hut on Christmas Eve. Now we say, "Remember when we used to go to Pizza Hut on Christmas Eve?"

Oh, I forgot to add about the assigned seating:

My company tried assigned seating at a "diversity training" once. It pissed everybody off. We're a very clique-y organization.
