1. Essential life skills: a. Cook a passable meal; b. Cleaning; c. Drive a car or navigate public transportation.

2. "Puttees" are leggings made from strips of cloth wrapped from ankle to knee. They were often used in WW-I and, judging from the book Corelli's Mandolin, also by Italians & Greeks in WW-II.

3. Cook some basic Indian foods.

1. Follow a recipe. Recognize that something (a piece of clothing or a room, for example) is dirty and know how to clean it. Possess the manners to enter any room and deal with the occupants politely.

2. I've learned a whole BUNCH of new words, most of which I've shared w/ y'all over at my place. But I finally learned how to pronounce mille feiulle (which I'm probably spelling wrong), which I'd never known. "Mill Fweeh" is a close transliteration.

3. Make laminated doughs, of course!

2. I haven't really learned any new words, but one came up in a conversation that I haven't heard for a very long time: philatelist, which means stamp collector.

3. I finally learned how to sink a pool ball more often than never. I force myself to stop thinking and wait until it feels like I have the cue in the right position. Also, I've learned to consider all the balls on the table and not just pick one I think maybe I might be able to drop into a pocket if I hit it at just the right angle. And I've learned to think about where the cue ball is going to end up after my turn, so I don't set up an easy shot for my opponent.

This weekend I finally beat my boyfriend at pool--twice! Including the one time he scratched after sinking the eight ball, I won half the six games we played. Which is amazing, considering that I've legitimately won a total of maybe four games in our nine-year relationship.
