Bah! I keep hearing everybody talk about Trader Joe's, and we don't have any in the vast wasteland that is Minnesota.

Trader Joe's makes me upset. Why, you ask? Because it's for people who heat, not people who cook. Yes, the food is probably higher-quality than Kraft mac & cheese, but it's still not cooking. No, it's not either, and I can't take it any more. I realize I'm not going to get any converts with that observation--in fact, probably the opposite--but my antipathy remains.

I was under the impression that they sold, like, fancy spices and ingredients rather than packaged food--is that not true?

Neither is exactly true, from my TJ's experience. They "don't use middlemen", which keeps prices low, but means the selection of foods can be odd. We don't buy too much of the prepackaged stuff, though there is a lot of it; we go for the inexpensive staples: tofu, tempeh, soy milk, eggs, bread, and amazing chicken (Empire Kosher brand).
