Nerves

I've had serious election jitters all day. I destroyed my fingernails. I worked out vigorously. I had a stiff drink.

Finally I must call it a day before results are in. It's been exhausting.

WWA is temporarily postponed on account of election fever. Unless one of you wants to post something.

Me too, Ben. What's most upsetting to you? (How can we choose?) I'm feeling even sicker this morning, looking at the dead heat and Bush declaring victory prematurely.

We are this close from a goddamn theocracy (ha, goddamn theocracy...ironic but true) in practice if not in name, and a bunch of states just blocked gay marriage, so we're this much closer.

Are we headed toward a civil war? The Fundamentalist Christians must be stopped. Stupidly, we've let their states have all the guns while we go unarmed. ;) (would be funnier if not so accurate)

I also scrubbed the bathroom last night.

It is hard to pin down what's most upsetting. I'm kind of torn with what to think. On one had I have this overwhelming feeling that the system just doesn't work or perhaps works in a way that can be taken advantage of. That's not to say I'm ready to accuse anyone of stealing votes, but the concept of wedge issues, semi to blatantly false campaigning, etc, it just doesn't feel right. The other side, though, is what if it is working. I know I live fairly insulated from the Real Michigan and perhaps from the Real America. If the majority of the people feel they want the country going in the same direction, while I can be disappointed and a little bit outraged, maybe the system does work. Well, except for the gay marriage amendments. Even if the system works it shouldn't allow discrimination and unequal rights to be written into state or federal constitutions.

Unfortunately, I don't predict any uprising or civil war. I predict the majority of the "left" to roll over and take it. Civil war probably counts as terrorism now anyway.

To revisit the whole not-accusing-anyone thing... there was a quote from the president of Diebold, who makes voting equipment, about his dedication to delivering Ohio to a certain political party.

Damnit, I am done being depressed--I'm now pissed off.

I am not much of a nationalist, but, damnit, I refuse to give my country away to people who care more about who Mary Cheney loves than they do about kids not getting health care or food. I know the founders were imperfect; I know that we're all imperfect. But I will not concede, and 60 million fellow citizens agree with me. And those young people who didn't bother to vote yesterday? I hope they're prepared to die in this administration's wars; I hope they're prepared to pay for this administration's follies; because it's on them.

go back and read the Declaration. Go back and read the Constitution. Go find documents from other places in this world and read them, too. Then go out and figure out how to live those ideals, and fight for them, how to fight for justice, and mercy, however imperfect; for feeding the hungry and clothing the poor. Battle with your deities, if you have them, on your side, against the people who only admit to one possible view of the world, no matter whether they call their deity God or Allah or something else entirely. Do you want to support openness and light? Or are you going to hide in the darkness? I voted for light yesterday, and I'm going to keep fighting for it today, and tomorrow, and the day after that.

WOO! Go Carla. This is why we need a fiery redhead around.

I'm not quite at the pick-my-ass-up-off-the-ground stage yet. My current tactic is to remember that it IS still a beautiful, sunny day, and that life DOES go on and I am NOT allowed to mope in bed for a month. With Thich Nhat Hahn as my guide:

Breathing in, I calm myself
Breathing out, I smile
Dwelling in the present moment,
I know this is a wonderful moment.
